Baby Registry Guide

Culture, companies, bloggers, and more all try to convince us that you need ALL of the baby products in order to be a functioning mom. That on top of all the baby products that exist are you left thinking: what do I actually need to register for? If so, this is for you!

TL;DR…. just skip to pictures below

I want to walk you through some of the things you may or may not need (because there’s almost no way I can address everything), and I’m going to give you options. I’m not trying to sell you on one specific product, all the products, or convince you to do what I did. This is just a list of things our mamas have recommended and some discussion to accompany these items!

For On The Go

Your baby is going to spend a lot of time in these, so it’s worth getting it right.

  • Car Seats:

    • Infant car seat: I personally used the Uppababy Mesa for the first year. The bonus? If your baby is asleep, you can just pop the car seat out without moving them. This also makes it easier if you plan to have more than one child — your infant seat can be reused.

    • Convertible car seat: This is what you move to after your baby outgrows their infant seat (likely around 12 months.) These last for several years and grow with your baby… so just go ahead and register for the one you actually want.

  • Strollers: Think long-term. Are you using it daily? Do you travel frequently? Will you have multiple kids in it? The answers help you decide whether to splurge or keep it simple. My followers say they love Mockingbird Strollers for price and versatility. Skip the stroller “extras” you won’t actually use them.

For Sleep

Clearly, your newborn will need a safe place to sleep. Your baby will most likely sleep anywhere (on your chest, in the car, in a swing, etc.), so think about where you want them to sleep while you rest.

  • Bassinet: I loved my Halo bassinet. When you’re sore, recovering, tired, and breastfeeding, being able to scoop up your baby without bending over is priceless. We’ve even lent it to friends … it really gets use!

  • Crib: You’ll obviously need a crib eventually — choose what works for your space (but see the most recommended below)

  • Pack-n-Play: Great for travel or as a playpen when your baby starts moving. However, check hotel crib availability before lugging one everywhere. Prices can range like crazy, but you will keep it and use it for all of your children.

  • Sound machine & night light: Soft illumination and white noise can make night time much easier.

Nursery

Your nursery should be functional and comfortable!

  • Changing pad: My husband says this is his favorite purchase. Easy to clean, and gives a dedicated space for diaper changes. But honestly…. you can change a baby almost anywhere so don’t overthink this one.

  • Humidifier: Not essential, but as a pediatric nurse, I love recommending this for colds and congestion.

  • Storage baskets & practical organization: Keeps diapers, wipes, and clothes within reach.

  • Glider or recliner: Comfort is key for long feeding sessions.

Around the House

These items make daily life manageable:

  • Baby carrier: Hands-free mobility while baby sleeps on you is essential!!!! Bonus: dads usually love this too!

  • Bouncer or swing: Babies often outgrow them by 3 months, so pick just one if you choose.

  • Play mat or gym: Encourages tummy time and developmental play. One is enough.

  • High chair: You won’t need this until solids, around 6 months, pick one that will last multiple kids.

  • Dish washing supplies: Helps make cleaning bottles easier

For Mom

  • Nursing & pumping essentials: Helps with feeding transitions.

  • Breastfeeding pillow: My favorite: My Breast Friend. Supports you and your baby for hours of feeding. Boppy is another fan fav, but I dont think any breastfeeding pillow is all that it is cracked up to be!

  • Comfy postpartum clothes: Comfort beats fashion, always. Lean for some darker colors because of blood.

  • Perineal care & recovery items: Frida Mom peri bottle, underwear, and foam are lifesavers. Don’t sleep on adult diapers either

  • Water bottle & snacks: Stay hydrated during feeds.

  • Nursing bras & tanks: Look for support and flexibility — tight bras can cause plugged ducts or mastitis

For Baby

The everyday essentials you’ll actually use:

  • Clothing basics: Convertible gowns are my kryptonite.

  • Swaddles: Babies are different; borrow from friends first if you can to see what works for you. 2–4 is usually plenty.

  • Burp cloths & bibs: You can never have too many!!

  • Pacifiers: Optional but often loved.

  • Grooming & health kit: Nail clippers, thermometer, etc.

  • Diapers & wipes: Stock up, you’ll go through them fast.

Skip:

  • MamaRoo: Many moms said it just isn’t worth it, so trust Birmingham Breastfeeding community on this one.

  • Extra swaddle blankets: You’ll likely be gifted plenty.

  • Wipe Warmers

  • Formula

  • Bottle Sample Packs

If you take away one thing from this guide, please know that you actually don’t need as much as it seems. Talk to other moms, read reviews, watch YouTube demos, and register only for what fits your lifestyle. You’ll likely need some things you didn’t register for, and vice versa.
